The Young Are At The Gates Hat
The Young Are At The Gates Hat
Did you know in the early 1900s sisters, daughters, mothers and grandmothers weren’t allowed to vote? Well, a group of smart and independent women thought that was plain wrong and set out to change it. Those in the Women’s Suffrage Movement (*suffrage is another word for the right to vote) marched and protested to demand the same voting rights as men. A group of women known as the SILENT SENTINELS protested outside the White House to let President Woodrow Wilson know they couldn’t be stopped until voting rights were equal. (Such a cool name, right - Silent Sentinels??? Shhhh!!!) One woman in that group was nurse, author and activist Lavinia Lloyd Dock. She wrote an essay that ended with these famous words, “The old stiff minds must give way. The old selfish minds must go...The young are at the gates!”
